The Dikke van Dale is going to add the word "vulvalippen" to the dictionary, the publisher has announced. This comes after years of campaigning by activist groups Dolle Mina's and Schaamteloos.
We say Shameless. Let us remove the shame from our language, bringing us all one step closer to a shame-free society.
SCHAAMTELOOS is an initiative dedicated to replacing the Dutch word 'schaamlippen' (literally 'shame lips') with 'vulvalippen' (vulva lips) in the Dutch language.
From a young age, we have been taught to use words that tell us we really shouldn't talk about these things: "schaamhaar" (shame hair), "schaambeen" (shame bone), "schaamstreek" (shame area), "schaamlippen" (shame lips). This language can have a negative influence on how we look at our own bodies and the bodies of others. Why should we experience shame about something that is perfectly natural?
It is time for us to take better care of ourselves 💕
